Does multi-woodwind specialist Bob Sheppard need any introduction? We don’t think so. Instead of making this post a name-dropping fest, here’s a quote from a podcast interview.
“A household name for saxophonists worldwide, Bob Sheppard has done it all. Superstar names such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Perter Erskine, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder and many, many, many legends pack his world-class resume.”
Okay still a name-dropping parade, it’s inevitable! In February Bob dropped by to pick up his Free Wind Alto #46. Meanwhile he has left us some inspiring comments. This is how Bob described his experience playing the Free Wind.
“Building a saxophone like the Amsterdam Free Wind is an enormous accomplishment, a labor of love and commitment to a tradition of craftsmanship lost 50 years ago. Congratulations to Friso Heidinga for developing a truly great acoustic alternative to the Selmer MK Vl standard barer. The “Free Wind” alto sax plays like no other alto I’ve owned or play tested, it is so appealing to my ear and very much fun to play. From the softest to the loudest range, there is an immediate sensation of fullness and width to the sound. The low end is huge, extremely positive, the high register is fat and creamy and I’m finding more tonal flexibility and dynamic range in all registers. Wide skips are effortless, the altissimo is amazingly stable and the tuning is spot on.”
Thanks so much Bob, looking forward to hearing more from you!
